Does Solar Work in Ireland? Here’s the Real Answer
If you’ve ever thought, “Sure, does solar even work in Ireland?”, you’re not the only one. Sure, even a grand stretch in the evening doesn’t always feel like enough sunshine to make it worth your while. With our cloudy skies and wet mornings, it’s fair to wonder if solar panels can really deliver in Ireland.
The short answer? Yes — solar works brilliantly in Ireland. In fact, our climate is surprisingly well suited to solar PV systems. Here’s why.
How Solar Panels Actually Work
Solar panels use daylight, not heat, to generate electricity. Even on overcast days, panels absorb diffused sunlight and convert it into usable power for your home.
There are two main types of systems:
-
Solar PV (Photovoltaic) panels: convert sunlight into electricity to run your appliances.
-
Solar Thermal panels: use sunlight to heat your water.
Because Ireland has a mild climate, solar panels don’t overheat or lose efficiency — they actually perform better in cooler conditions.
Do Solar Panels Work in Irish Weather?
Yes — and better than most people expect.
Ireland gets between 1,100 and 1,600 hours of sunshine per year (although it certainly doesnt feel like it), depending on the area. That’s plenty of daylight for a well-sized solar PV system to generate meaningful savings year after year.
Typical results for Irish homes:
-
30–50% reduction in annual electricity bills
-
Panels still generate power on cloudy days
-
Systems can provide 70–80% of what the same setup would produce in Spain
So, whether you’re in Dublin drizzle or Wexford sunshine — your panels will still be working away, day in and day out.
How Efficient Are Solar Panels in Ireland?
Modern panels are far more advanced than they were a decades ago and always improving with a push from governments around the globe for renewable energy sources.
High-efficiency panels can convert over 20% of daylight into electricity — perfect for our mix of clouds and sunshine.
A typical 4kW solar PV system can produce around 3,500 kWh per year, enough to power your lights, heat the water for showers, and keep the kettle going — all without worrying about the immersion.
How to Help Your Panels Perform Their Best:
You don’t need the perfect south-facing roof for solar to make sense.
-
Panels work great on most Irish homes with a bit of daylight and not too much shade.
-
The ideal roof pitch is somewhere around 30–40°, but it’s not a dealbreaker.
-
Give them a quick rinse once or twice a year and they’ll keep humming away nicely.
Blue Sky Solar designs each system to match your home, not the other way around.
Real Results with a Local Touch
At Blue Sky Solar, we’re proud to be a local installer based in Gorey, Co. Wexford, serving homes right across Leinster — from Dublin and Kildare to Wicklow, Meath, and beyond.
We take real pride in doing things the right way — coming out to meet people, measuring their roof in person, and making sure solar is genuinely a good fit before anything else. No pushy sales talk — just a proper conversation and a cup of tea if the kettle’s on.
Here’s what some of our customers have said:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “It’s been about a month since we had our solar installed by Blue Sky Solar here in the Wexford/Gorey area. Communication was brilliant — never left waiting for answers. Everything works perfectly, and we even added another battery because it’s performing so well!”
— Johan Fourie, Wexford
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Amazing job — efficient service, always on time. I’ve even produced more energy than I’ve used, selling the extra back to the grid! Highly recommend.”
— John Cullen, Leinster
That kind of feedback is what keeps us going — real local homes, saving real money, powered by the Irish daylight (and maybe a few cups of tea along the way). 🍵
SEAI Grants & Support
The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) offers generous support for homeowners looking to go solar — and thankfully, the process is fairly straightforward (especially when you’ve a hand with it).
Right now, homeowners can get a grant of up to €1,800 towards a domestic solar PV system.
The grant is based on the size of your setup:
-
€700 per kWp for the first 2 kWp installed
-
€200 per kWp for every additional kWp, up to 4 kWp
That means a typical 4 kWp system (the size most homes go for) qualifies for the maximum €1,800.
There’s no extra grant for batteries at the moment, but we can still include one in your design if it suits your home and usage.
At Blue Sky Solar, we know the grant process can seem a bit daunting the first time around — so we walk you through all the paperwork and collect it at source, making the whole process a breeze from start to finish.
We’ll make sure everything is done properly, so you can just focus on getting your panels up and running without feeling overwhelmed.

Common Questions About Solar in Ireland
Do solar panels work in winter?
Yes. While production is lower in winter months, panels still generate power from daylight. A well-sized system balances production across the year.
Do I need a south-facing roof?
South is ideal, but east- or west-facing roofs still work very well. We’ll check your roof orientation before recommending a setup.
How long does installation take?
Most residential installations take 1–2 days, with minimal disruption.
What maintenance do panels need?
Just an occasional clean to remove dust or bird droppings — otherwise, they’re nearly maintenance-free.
